Spain's Low Mobile Penetration Myth, Mobile-First in Every Market

Latest figures published by the Expedia group reveal that hotel reservations made through mobile devices continue to increase. Globally, one in four rooms booked during the third quarter of 2015 was made by one of these devices. The study also notes that more than half of all global smartphone bookings were made two days prior to the stay.

The data also clarifies some misconceptions that Europe's southern markets and consumers are less mobile savvy than their northern market cousins. The majority of Spanish hotel bookings were made between 31 and 60 days prior to stay. One in four of these bookings were processed on mobile devices. Over 15% of Expedia mobile bookings for Spanish hotels were performed over 90 days in advance, and over 15% were made within 24 hours of stay.

Also, the results of the third quarter of 2015 presented by Expedia shows that the average price of hotel room in Spain through a mobile device increased by 4%, reaching 123 euros per night. Saturday's were the most popular day of the week for mobile hotel bookings, followed by Friday and Wednesday in second and third places respectively.

Expedia data for the third quarter of 2015 also show that Britain, Spain and the United States are the countries of origin of tourists with the greatest share of hotel bookings made for Spanish hotels.  In addition, mobile hotel bookings by British travelers bound for Spain increased over 70% compared to the same period in 2014. 

Similarly, mobile bookings made by Spanish tourists has experienced triple-digit growth during the third quarter of 2015. Other data show that the average length of stay in the Spanish hotels booked via mobile is 2.7 nights; Russian travelers who book through these devices stay an average of 3.9 nights, ranking first in length of stay, followed by the Irish and Italian, with 3.8 nights in both cases. Spanish tourists averaged two nights stay when managing their room via mobile device.
