Data: Spain and beyond - easyJet Market Penetration by Country

 

U.K. based low cost airline easyJet expects to boost its passenger numbers flying through Barcelona-El Prat Airport to 3.1 million in 2016,  a 12% jump compared to 2015. The company announced that Barcelona will become the U.K. airline's base of Spanish operations, where it serves 18 destinations in the country. In total, easyJet foresees 4% growth in its Spanish air traffic to 13.5 million passengers. One in five of all easyJet passengers originate in or are destined to Spain.

The low cost airline began operations in Barcelona-El Prat in June 1996, connecting Barcelona with its central operational base in Luton Airport. easyJet closed its Madrid base in 2012, after a 100% surge in airport charges.  EasyJet's 2016 forecast for Spain is set to exceed 13.5 million passengers, up 4%, with the launch of 14 new routes, among them including Malaga-Amsterdam, Amsterdam Mallorca, Menorca-Lyon, Mallorca and Menorca-Toulouse-Nice.

European short-haul market

The total European short-haul market grew by 5% year-on-year in the 12 months to 30 September 2015, sustained in part by a continued low fuel price. Low cost carrier share of the short haul market increased by around one percentage point to 42%. In the same period easyJet’s competitors increased capacity by 7% in its markets, with particularly strong growth in the UK market. Over its financial year easyJet increased capacity by 5%, with growth of 4% in the first half increasing to 6% in the second half.
